Athletic Trainers: Who & What...

Athletic trainers are duly educated and nationally certified healthcare practitioners. The field of athletic training entails many aspects of sports medicine including, but not limited to, injury assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation of injuries and illness.  Athletic trainers work under the direction of a licensed physician (which shall not be construed as requiring the physical presence of one), in multidisciplinary settings from physicians offices to educational settings to athletic contests to military settings.

Athletic trainers are registered professionals, each with an individual National Provider Identifier (NPI), and also have specific taxonomy codes for reimbursement purposes. Athletic trainers have Current Procedural Terms (CPT) identified for the use of reimbursement from third party entities for services performed (Athletic trainers are to use 97000 codes for reimbursement. 97005-AT eval, 97006- AT re-eval).
